Mock App. Design: Design Thinking Group Project

July 20, 2014 | By tova.y.miller@gmail.com,

The problem: Too much traffic on UF campus in Turlington Plaza due to tablers.
Solution: An app that distributes organization’s ads and rewards students for looking at the ads.

I worked with two classmates to create a solution to a problem we found on campus. First, we thought about the wide myriad of campus problems. Then we interviewed fellow students about how they felt when they walked through the crowded area of Turlington during the day. Our research led us to find that most people were annoyed with tablers (those who hand out flyers). After a long brainstorming session and many days observing the space we decided the most logical solution would be to create an application that could replace or reduce the number of tablers. This app would also help keep students informed about what was going on campus and give them rewards for checking out the events and announcements on the app. UF2GO would also allow students to keep up to date on what’s happening in the organizations they are a part of. Additionally, students would also be able to message people in their organizations and classes directly through the app.

Album Redesign: Of Monsters and Men

July 8, 2014 | By tova.y.miller@gmail.com,

This piece was completed as a class project. The assignment was to open your iTunes, turn on your shuffle and play the fifth song on the playlist. Students were then asked to create a new album cover for that band in under 45 minutes.

MonkeyWish.com/give

July 3, 2014 | By tova.y.miller@gmail.com,

This was another class assignment. We were to choose a business or organization and create a promo piece. My client was MonkeyWish.com/Give. They are an organization that has a service for nonprofits to create wish lists to help nonprofit organizations receive the actual items that they need instead of receiving cash donations. Users can log on and create a wish list from an iPhone, iPad, Android or a regular computer browser. I decided to create an iPhone brochure with a small amount of information and feature common questions and answers about MonkeyWish.com/give. I kept the design simple, as most iOs 7 programming is these days. MonkeyWish.com/give is easily accessible through mobile and that is the main reason I chose to present the information in this fashion. Additionally, MonkeyWish.com/give is about changing the world through giving gifts and that is why the brochure would be delivered to other nonprofit organizations through a wrapped present.

Habemus Papam: Argentine is new pope

July 8, 2014 | By tova.y.miller@gmail.com,

Click here to check out the article that I co-wrote in Florence, Italy for the Independent Florida Alligator or read it below.

After two days, white smoke from the Sistine Chapel signaled the end of the search for a new pope.

On Wednesday, members of the College of Cardinals selected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to be the 266th pontiff and lead the Roman Catholic Church under his new name, Pope Francis I.

Thousands of people packed into St. Peter’s Square to see Pope Francis address the world for the first time.

Rebecca Drescher, a 20-year-old UF English junior who is studying abroad in Rome, said she had to act fast to make it through the sea of waving flags and umbrellas to capture pictures of the historical moment.

“It stopped raining when the pope came out,” she said. “He addressed the Roman people and everyone cheered ‘Francesco!’ over and over. Everyone was extremely emotional and excited. It was the coolest thing, being a part of history.”

Francis is the first cardinal from the Americas to be elected pope and the first non-European to lead the church in at least 1,200 years. He succeeds Benedict XVI, the pope emeritus, who announced his resignation last month.

In Gainesville, Manuel Vasquez, professor and chairman of the UF College of Religion, said the election acted as a shift in the Catholic world.

“It’s a recognition that most growth is in the south, particularly in Africa, South America and Asia,” he said.

Francis is also the first pope from the Jesuit order.

Despite Francis’ age, Vasquez said he expects the new pope to lean toward reform.

“[The Jesuits] have a long history of being innovators in the church,” Vasquez added. “And along with that comes controversy also.”

Gonzalo Girado, a 22-year-old UF mechanical engineering senior and president of the Argentine Student Association, said he was proud an Argentine was selected pope.

“It shows the church is more diverse and how Latin American society as a whole is making a movement,” he said.

Luke DeHon, a 20-year-old UF economics junior and Catholic Gators member, said he will support Pope Francis because of his views and his alignment with church doctrine.

“[Francis] teaches what Christ taught, and he reflects a lot of what youth want, including a strong foundation,” DeHon said.

TM BRAND

TM BRAND

TM. No –- I’m not talking about the trademark or the initials from HIMYM. I’m talking about myself, Tova Miller. I am a 22-year-old recent journalism graduate from the University of Florida. This sleek design was created to show my professional manner accented with a pop of color and personality. I am a music-loving, dance around the room, go to concerts type of gal. But for me that is not where the excitement begins. Branding and content strategy are my go to talents. Most importantly, I think that everyone and everything has a story that deserves to be told.
